Clipse - "Freedom"

The latest single from Clipse called "Freedom" is off of their album Til The Casket Drops.  I think this duo is one of the most underrated groups in hip-hop.  Pusha T and Malice, who happend to be real life brothers, both flow with a conviction that is rarely heard in today's hip-hop.  If you haven't already picked up their album, GO GET IT!

"Brooklyn's Finest" - Official Trailer

Check out the trailer for this new movie from director of "Training Day" Antoine Fuqua. The movie consists of an all-star line-up including Wesley Snipes, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke and Richard Gere. The movie reminds me of a cross between "Training Day" and "New Jack City". I'm excited to see Snipes returning to his former roles of a street kingpin, i.e. "New Jack City" and "Sugar Hill".

The movie also stars Michael K. Williams, the actor who played Omar Little on HBO's "The Wire".

50 cent vs. Barack Obama

No, no, no! This is not one of Fiddy's lame beefs in an attempt for publicity, but rather director Byron Hurt's short documentary examining black manhood in America.  The director uses the images set forth by the at time presidential candidate, Barack Obama, against that of a rapper, 50 Cent, to illustrate his point about black masculinity in today's society.  While watching this short documentary, which was released October 2008, try to get past looking at the two men being contrast and concentrate on the images that they both represent.  Let me know your views on this subject.

Apache - R.I.P

After a prolonged illness, Flavor Unit rapper, Apache has passed away today (January 22, 2010).  Apache was most notably known for 1992's "Gangsta Bitch".  A song about only wanting to date streetwise women.  Oddly enough, the song which peaked at #11 on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles chart, was produced by A Tribe Called Quest.  Born Anthony Teaks, the New Jersey emcee was one of the three original rappers in Queen Latifah's Flavor Unit.  Apache's appearaces include collaborations with Naughty by Nature, Fat Joe, Tupac, and A Tribe Called Quest.

Condolences are in order for the rapper's family.  May he forever Rest In Peace.

Yay Area Ol' Skool Classic (Bay Area Stand Up!)

Okay, I’m going to need you to trust me on this one. This song is the ish, for real! Being a native Bay Area resident, I have a certain affinity for anything that relates directly to the Bay.

Journey is a rock band that was formed in San Francisco by former members of the group, Santana. Their song “Lights” is an old school classic about returning home to San Francisco as the night ends and a new day begins. The song was originally written to be about L.A. but singer/songwriter Steve Perry didn’t like the way the song sounded at the time. So the song sat in the corner, it wasn’t until Perry joined the group and moved to San Francisco that he felt the song would work. The singer has been quoted as saying “The bay' fit so nice” and “It was one of those early morning going across the bridge things when the sun was coming up and the lights were going down. It was perfect.” [source]

If you are a night owl, like myself, then you will definitely be able to appreciate this song. You don’t have to be from the Bay Area to develop a liking for this song. You can be from anywhere and still have an appreciation for these lyrics. The next time you are up late because time has slipped past you and you notice the sun rising, take a minute to put this song on and enjoy the sunrise. Trust me; you’ll thank me for it later.

Today also happens to be band member Steve Perry's Birthday.  Happy Birthday from Everything will be Everything.

R.I.P. - Teddy Pendergrass

At the age of 59, soul singer, Teddy Pendergrass has passed away. Affectionately known as "Teddy Bear" to the thousands of female fans who adored him. As one of the leading male sex symbols of his early career, the singer gained a reputation for his forceful, masculine voice and passionate love ballads. Pendergrass became one of the most successful male soul singers of the 70's and early 80's. The five-time Grammy-nominated singer had chart-topping hits in three different decades with 1978’s “Close the Door,” 1988’s “Joy” and 1991’s “It Should’ve Been You,” plus well-known songs like “Love TKO,” “Two Hearts” with Stephanie Mills and “Hold Me,” a duet with Whitney Houston that was featured on Houston’s 1985 debut album. Pendergrass began his career as lead singer of the Philadelphia soul group Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. He sung the lead on their Number One hit “If You Don’t Know Me By Now”. He would later leave the group to embark on his own solo career. Pendergrass’ rise to international fame was briefly halted after he was involved in a 1982 car crash that left him in the hospital for six months and paralyzed from the waist down, but he didn’t let the accident prevent him from making music.

His music will live on in the hearts and souls of his many fans.

J. Holiday's "Love Lockdown" Cover

Do you Remember when Kanye West released "Love Lockdown" off of the 808s and Heartbreak album? Almost one and a half years later, J. Holiday has completed a cover of the Ye's song minus the autotune. Holiday puts a unique twist on the song previously made popular by Mr. West. Its different but still manages to keep the same feel as the original, I like it. What do you think? Can you hear the influence of Marvin Gaye on this song?

Sade's "Soldier of Love"

Sade's new album, Soldier of Love, is scheduled for release worldwide on February 8, 2010. Here is the video for the first single off of the album which shares the same title.

When I give you my all, when I make you climb the wall; girl you gone think.......

So first Trey Songz gave us his hit, "Invented Sex". Then Usher and Keri Hilson jumped on board and added their twist to it. This time Raheem Davaughn gives us his spin on the popular song and murdered the other two versions! Usher and Ms. Keri Baby came wack! The original version by Trey Songz was cool, but this ish right here is a baby maker! This version will be featured on Raheem DeVaughn's upcoming mixtape entitle Mr. February. Here is Mr. DeVaughn with "Re-Invented Sex".

Sophia Fresh ft. T-Pain vs. Diamond ft. Cee-Lo

Female recording group, Sophia Fresh, originally released this song sometime in 2007. Their version also featured T-Pain on the track with the girls. In late 2009, Diamond (formerly of Crime Mob) released her own version of the song which features Cee-Lo of Gnarls Barkley and Goodie Mob fame. Which one do we like better?

Single Black Women x ABC News

With a shortage of black men, listen as these African-American women discuss with ABC News the obstacles in finding a man that is ready for marriage. Why are these women single and not able to find a man? Are there standards too high? Should they look outside their race? Or are the women in the video just too full of themselves? Let me know what you think about the situation that the women in this video face.

Flavor Flav WTF?!?! Are you serious?

This is just another reason why I hate autotune!

Milkcrate x HBO Collaboration

D.J. and fashion designer Aaron LaCrate's Milkcrate Athletics has team up with HBO to produce a line of shirts inspired by the hit show "The Wire". Being a die hard fan of the show, I was more than excited when I heard about the line. However, after viewing the line, I found myself feeling a little disappointed. I feel as though the tees lacked creativity especially given the range of depth that the show gave viewers, the development of the characters and the overall plot of the series. Aaron LaCrate's team describe the tees as "edgy, colorful and powerful". I would describe the tees as boring and unimaginative. This is one of the most uninspired lines that I have viewed. I believe that there was so much more that could have been done with this line. A show this great shouldn't be subjected to designs this awful. Remember, this is just my personal opinion. You can judge for yourself by checking out the line here. The line is currently for sale exclusively at Karmaloop.com
